Swiss report diesil more green than electrics

The Register -- Swiss boffins have mounted an investigation into the largely unknown environmental burdens of electric cars using lithium-ion batteries, and say that the manufacturing and disposal of batteries presents no insurmountable barriers to electric motoring. However, their analysis reveals that modern diesel cars are actually better for the environment than battery ones.

The infrastructure is here, the technology is ready, fuel consumption can dramatically start to decrease when the EPA allows them. Time to get the politicians out of the way.

The new ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) doesn't smell much at all. Certainly not like the old stuff. I'll admit I don't want to stick my head up the tailpipe of my Diesel truck, but I don't really want to suck on the exhaust from my Sonata either. (Disclaimer - I haven't driven my Diesel in Canada, so I don't know if you have the same flavor of ULSD as we do in the States. Feel free to educate me on that.)

We're just starting to see some of the newer Diesel models entering the US market and they may be able to compete here, but they don't have the same kind of fuel economy numbers that their European cousins do. It's a shame, really. Diesel could be a real hit here if they would remove, or at least reduce, the onerous highway motor fuel tax. Diesel would instantly become cheaper than regular gas and everybody would want one. (I'll take two - one in a nice little car and one in a really big truck. Thanks.)

If bio-diesel fits into that class then ok. We have to have a better way to generate the electricity. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

An electric car recharged from coal is not clean.

Most newer diesel cars / trucks are much cleaner than let's say many 1985 or thereabouts clunkers who spew oil, unburned gasoline and all sorts of noxious gases into the atmosphere. In addition, diesel engines are MUCH better for towing and are much more fuel efficient for that task... that means, much less fossil fuel for the same amount of towing capacity and still much higher fuel mileage. less oil also means less pollution.
