BP Lawsuits over oil spill take center stage

Reuters.com -- By George Prentice

More than 2,000 miles from the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, a panel of U.S. judges heard arguments from lawyers on Thursday on how piles of oil spill-related lawsuits against BP Plc should be merged.

The panel, meeting in Boise, Idaho, as part of its regularly scheduled rotation among federal courts, did not immediately rule on how it would handle the mounting civil litigation brought against BP and other defendants involved in the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history.

A decision is expected within several weeks.

At stake is whether civil lawsuits from injured rig workers, fishermen, property owners, investors and others will be combined in Houston, where BP has its U.S. headquarters and wants the cases heard, or New Orleans, the preferred venue for many plain

AC-302: it depends. IF BP is found to have acted negligent, they have to pony up the whole amount alone. If they are found to not been negligent, then the others will share to the extent that they were involved in the business venture. However, they can refuse and then BP would have to pull them into court.

Here come the ambulance chasers, the trial lawyers,
the big Obama supporters to clean BP's pockets for
good. Kill big oil, stop all offshore drilling &
drive a Chevrolet Volt 40 miles in between battery
charges. Green! Yippie!

I wonder if BP's partners will be required to pony up some money? or is BP a "deep pocket"?

While I could be upset like everyone else, BP didn't put that oil in the Earth. I don't think they should be forced to do anthing.

We all knew the lawsuits would be coming especially the longer the oil spill was happening. Will be a drop in the bucket for BP.

Lots of news here. The more important thing is to finish cleaning ans closing the pipe so no further oil flows. All the older areas where they drilled, should be checked to insure they are shut, or need fixing.

Already posted to article yesterday. Again, I say if they can get all cases under one class action suit the firm with the most clients gets to file the claim and receive 25% to 50% of the award. While the remaining is divided among all claimants not optioning out. Therefore the representing Law firm makes more total money, so it's to the law firms advantage & the claimants will likely end up with less per person.

This is so stupid. Let it go and move on. What will this accomplish other than lining the pockets of the greenie weenies and their cohorts. It serves no purpose and costs the taxpayers millions in court costs and attorney fees.

Holding these meetings in Idaho minimizes the number of Gulf Coast residents who can attend. They would just get in the way of the panel members who know best what other people need.
